Vallimalai, a hill village in Katpadi taluk of Vellore district, is revered as the birthplace of Valli, Murugan's tribal-born consort. Legend holds that a drop of Lakshmi's sweat fell upon the grass here, was consumed by a doe, and Valli was thus born, later to be wedded by Murugan after his celebrated courtship. The hill bears a rock-cut Subramaniar shrine attributed to the Pallavas, with ancient cave carvings and inscriptions attesting more than a thousand years of worship, later extended by the Cholas. On the descent are notable Jain sculptures and inscriptions of Digambara Jain ascetics, protected by the Archaeological Survey of India, and a Thiruppugazh ashram flourishes on the hill. Here Valli, Murugan and Deivanai are held to dwell eternally. The temple's foremost celebration is the Valli Kalyanam, the divine wedding of Valli and Murugan, observed with great fervour at Panguni Uthiram, alongside Thai Poosam, Vaikasi Visakam and Skanda Sashti.
