Sri Kalyana Vinayagar temple stands in the old George Town quarter of Chennai, in the busy Kothawal Bazaar (Parrys) area, and is believed to date to about the 16th century, having been renovated and expanded over the centuries. The presiding Ganesha is enshrined in a standing posture, adorned with a finely wrought golden crown and rich ornamentation. He is venerated as 'Kalyana Vinayagar,' Ganesha in his auspicious, marriage-granting aspect, and devotees, particularly those seeking timely marriage, marital harmony and auspicious beginnings for new ventures, offer prayers here before undertaking important family functions. As with Ganesha shrines everywhere, he is worshipped first, as the remover of obstacles and the bestower of success. The temple is a well-known landmark among the cluster of historic shrines in George Town, one of Chennai's oldest quarters. Vinayaka Chaturthi is the chief festival, celebrated with special abhishekams, alankaram and offerings of modakam, drawing devotees from across the city to seek the Lord's grace.
