The Life
Isaignaniyar was the wife of Sadaya Nayanar and the mother of Sundarar, and one of only three women among the sixty-three Nayanmars. A devout Shaiva of Tirunavalur, she is honoured for giving birth to and raising Nambiyarurar, who became the great saint Sundaramurti, Sundarar being unique among the Nayanmars in that both his parents are also saints. Sekkizhar's Periya Puranam devotes a single verse to her, naming her son and husband and praising her devotion to Shiva and to His servants. As the mother who nurtured one of the foremost Tevaram poets, whose hymns still resound in Shaiva worship, she is revered among the Lord's servants and attained His grace. Her guru puja falls in the Tamil month of Chithirai under the star Chithirai.
