The Life
Rudra Pasupati Nayanar was a learned brahmin of Thiruthalaiyur devoted to the chanting of the Sri Rudram, the Vedic hymn to Rudra-Shiva. Both at dawn and at dusk he would go down into the temple tank, immerse himself up to the neck in the cold water, and, raising his folded hands above his head, recite the Rudram in a clear, sustained voice with complete absorption. Enduring this severe discipline day after day without break, his whole being became fixed upon Shiva through the sacred Vedic word. Pleased with such unwavering and austere worship, the Lord granted Rudra Pasupati Nayanar His grace and an honoured place among the sixty-three devotees.
