The Life

Born to Sivapada Hrudayar at Sirkazhi, the infant Sambandar was left by the temple tank while his father bathed. Crying for his parents, he was consoled by Shiva and Uma, who gave the child a cup of the Goddess's own breast-milk, the milk of divine wisdom (gnana). When his father returned and demanded who had fed him, the three-year-old pointed to the sky and burst into his first hymn, "Thodudaiya Seviyan." Thus began the child-saint's life of singing the Thevaram across the Tamil land, working miracles, confounding the Jains at Madurai, and reviving the dead. At sixteen, on his wedding day at Achalpuram, he prayed and merged, with all the wedding party, into a blaze of divine light at Shiva's feet in the month of Vaikasi.
