Sthala Mahātmyam

The Kailasanathar temple at Murappanadu, downstream on the Tamiraparani in the Srivaikuntam region, is the fifth and central shrine of the Nava Kailasam, hence its epithet Nadu (Middle) Kailasam, and is the sthala of Guru, Brihaspati, the planet Jupiter. It too arose from the nine flowers cast upon the river by Romasa, disciple of Agastya. Its most striking feature is the Nandi bearing a horse's face: legend tells of a king's daughter cursed with a horse's countenance who was cured through worship here, whereupon Shiva's bull Nandi took upon itself the horse-face she shed, and so the Nandi is seen with equine features to this day. Shiva is worshipped as Kailasanathar and the Goddess as Sivakami Ammal. As a Guru sthala, the temple is especially thronged during Guru Peyarchi, the transit of Jupiter, when devotees pray for wisdom, prosperity and marital blessings. Maha Sivaratri is the other principal observance at this central station of the river pilgrimage.
