Atop the Sivagiri hill, Palani enshrines Murugan as Dhandayudhapani — the renunciate who, after losing the contest for the fruit of wisdom (gnana-pazham) to his brother Ganesha, cast off all ornament and stood as a staff-bearing ascetic. 'Pazham nee' — 'you are the fruit' — is the phrase that names Palani. The hill idol is famed as a navapashanam (nine-medicine) amalgam attributed to the siddhar Bogar. Thaipusam draws vast kavadi pilgrimages here.
