Near Kumbakonam on the Cauvery, Swamimalai is the abode where the child Murugan became the teacher of his own father: expounding the inner meaning of the Pranava mantra 'Om' to Lord Shiva himself. For this he is Swaminatha — the Lord who is the master. The shrine crowns a man-made hillock climbed by sixty steps, one for each Tamil year. It is a jewel among the Arupadai Veedu and a great Vaikasi Visakam kshetram.
